"The Lord is my strength and song, and he is become my salvation: he is my God, and I will prepare him a habitation; my father's God, and I will exalt him." Exodus 15:2
The hard work of two piano students at Appalachian Bible College will culminate during their Senior Recital on Saturday.
Elisabeth Brown, from High Ridge, MO, has been taking piano lessons since the age of six. She recalls “being forced to practice until I enjoyed it. But now, I greatly appreciate the way [my parents] made me continue lessons; I wouldn’t have made it here otherwise!”
Among other selections, Brown will play Richard Addinsell’s “Warsaw Concerto.” She says, “I love listening to the flowing, passionate melody and reveling in the fact that those powerful sounds are controlled by my fingers. Music is one of my greatest joys. I feel a little bit of the greatness of God’s beauty.”
Like his classmate, Zechariah Emery remembers being told by his parents that he was going to learn an instrument. He chose piano, too. “I eventually learned to love music. I love teaching others and watching them grow.” Emery’s hometown is Egg Harbor City, NJ.
About the upcoming recital Emery says, “I hope [the audience] will find some of the enjoyment I get from listening to music from many different time periods.” Emery’s pieces include selections from Bach, Mussorgsky, and Gershwin.
Both musicians are students of Mr. Roger VanMaasdam and will graduate from ABC in December. Their Senior Recital is given in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Bachelor of Arts degree in Bible & Theology and Music Ministry. Emery wants to use his skills at a church or school, while Brown will be marrying in January and serving in a local church as well as teaching private lessons.
The public is invited to the Senior Recital at Appalachian Bible College, Anderson Hall: Nov. 7 at 7:00 PM. Admission is free and a reception will follow.
Look who was interviewed for a WVNS 59News series on "The Power of Prayer." Dean Childs pointed out that the more we know about God and His character, the more we desire to pray to Him. Catch the story at 6:00, 10:00, and 11:00 PM.
Fred is spending the weekend at the Creation Museum, meeting young people who are serious about the authority and inerrancy of the Bible from Genesis to Revelation.
This is the day that Elisabeth and Zechariah have worked toward for years! Join us for their Senior Recital at 7:00 PM in Anderson Hall.
"And Ezra blessed the Lord, the great God. And all the people answered, Amen, Amen, with lifting up their hands: and they bowed their heads, and worshipped the Lord with their faces to the ground." Nehemiah 8:6
This is how Camping Ministry students do class! On their Basic Skills campout Friday night, they got hands-on instruction in building fires and shelters, cooking over a fire, tying knots, and belaying.
Students are registering for Spring 2016 classes this week! If you are considering coming to ABC next semester, there is still time to apply.
Congratulations to Betsy and Zack, who made it through their Senior Recital on Saturday with flying colors. One big step closer to graduating and skillfully using music for God's glory!
In Monday's chapel we observed #VeteransDay early, giving thanks for these vets among our campus family and praying for those in active duty. Thank you to Chaplain Murdoch (in uniform) for sharing about the special calling of military chaplaincy.
Fifty-five years ago this month: Pinter Hall was being constructed by volunteers. Originally known as the "white house," it served as the president's residence before being converted to faculty offices. #tbt
The Chorale's rehearsal room was bursting at the seams yesterday as students from four high schools were invited to sing along and get a taste of collegiate choir. Thanks for joining us, Emmanuel Christian School, Lewisburg Baptist Academy, Mercer Christian Academy, and Wood County Christian School.
"Leaders are vitally important in the plan of God. Ask God to use YOU to lead someone: your own family, that young disciple, or perhaps someday a group of new believers in an unreached people group... wherever God takes you."
This morning Dr. Mark Johnson drew some lessons on leadership from Deuteronomy 34. Listen here:
"O Lord God, you have begun to show your servant your greatness, and your mighty hand: for what God is there in heaven or in earth, that can do according to your works, and according to your might?" Deuteronomy 3:24

When morning gilds the skies
My heart awaking cries:
May Jesus Christ be praised!
This day started with a colorful sunrise above Hoops Hall.
For 15 years ABC alumni Steve and Vicky have been reaching out to Muslims in France (currently estimated at 6 million people). After Friday's attacks, they write:
"As believers you can pray for us, our colleagues and churches throughout Europe. 1 Timothy 2:1-4 reminds us to pray for authorities so that we can live a quiet and peaceful life—something we should not take for granted. 2 Thessalonians 3:1-5 encourages us to think about the open doors of opportunity and the need to remain steadfast in the midst of spiritual warfare. Wisdom and boldness are needed in equal measure in the current context."
These Cross Lanes Christian School students sure look good in ABC t-shirts!
Some members of Chorale, the ABC student choir, took a short break from Christmas concert rehearsals for a field trip to the "Miracle of Christmas" production at Sight & Sound Theatres. A big thank you to Twin Valley Bible Chapel for hosting us and letting us share some music with you on Sunday.
"God is a God of the impossible. I never thought I from Charleston, West Virginia, would make it all the way to the northern part of Europe. God can clearly do anything. All it takes is your willingness."
Scott, a senior at ABC, had never been out of the country before a missions trip to Scandinavia came together unexpectedly last summer. From leading Bible camp activities to evangelizing Muslims to encouraging missionaries—Scott got to experience ministry in a variety of settings. It gave him a renewed commitment to Jesus' instruction in Matthew 9:38.
"Pray for God to 'send laborers into the harvest.' I never understood the gravity of that until I was in Sweden."
"By [Jesus] therefore let us offer the sacrifice of praise to God continually, that is, the fruit of our lips giving thanks to his name." Hebrews 13:15
